Father and Son Essay -- essays papers
Father and Son Just whom is Edmund Gosseââ¬â¢s Father and Son written for? Is it for the Father, or for the Son, or, as Edmund Gosse tells us, for the public, so they can have a record of life in a rigidly religious family? Edmund begins his book by telling you that it is a historical record, an important chronicle that is to be used, basically as a reference for a period of time. Yet, in the first sentence of the first chapter, we can see that this is truly not his purpose. The first words on the page does not reference a historical event; they are, instead, cathartic. Edmund tries very hard to convince his reader that ââ¬Å"this is not an autobiographyâ⬠(217). Try as he might, he did not persuade me. I will grant that for Edmund Gosse to profess to have written this book as if it were a biography of his father, or even as a historical chronicle, was beneficial. First off, by writing something which is to document a period of time Edmund would be writing in the methodical and scientific style of his father, which then would mirror the lifestyle in which he is forced to live. Secondly, Edmund wants the reader to see his father as he did, with honor, awe, resentment and even shame. Edmund does this quietly, he does not shout his shame, he merely reiterates it as a anecdote of a story ââ¬Å"...his very absence of imagination aided him in his work. (113)â⬠. Finally, Edmund, being able to portray this book as a portrait of someone other than himself, is a chance to humble himself, no matter what he says about the father, to the reader. All of these methods that Edmund uses to sway our thinking actually serve only to benefit Edmund Gosse himself. This actually makes it more of an autobiographical account than ... ...ren. They are the sons and daughters of Lifeââ¬â¢s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seen not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forts. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archerââ¬â¢s hand be for gladness; For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.ââ¬

Female characters from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and from The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy Essay
Compare the presentation of two female characters, one from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and one from The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy, Pay close attention to their roles as outsiders. In these works of prose fiction, both authors write about women confronted by circumstances that make their lives very difficult. The women are, or become, outsiders of one sort or another. You will need to: show your knowledge of both texts Use quotations to support the points that you make Show a knowledge of the life and times that each author was writing in Show what you understand the term outsider to mean. I am writing an essay comparing ââ¬ËCurly`s wifeââ¬â¢ from the novel Of Mice and Men and ââ¬ËRhoda Brookââ¬â¢ from The Withered Arm. John Steinbeck was born in 1902 and lived until 1968 was an American who lived in California this is where he wrote his novels. He always had jobs on farms during his highschool-years, or, as he was very much interested in science, helped out in local laboratories. After school John went to college at Stanford University but John dropped out of school without a degree to enter journalism in New York. He then returned to California to write novel writer. Of Mice and Men was the first novel that was recognised, Of Mice and Men was first published in 1937. In 1962 John Steinbeck got the Nobel-prize for literature. Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men was a story about two men who move from Ranch to Ranch earning just enough money to last them the week. John Steinbeck wrote this story from experience he also travelled from ranch to ranch so knew what it was like to not have a life and have life plane just dreams to look forward to which were just distance dreams. Steinbeck expresses his feelings on life living on a ranch through Georges character, in the book George was always repeating his story on men living on the ranch and describes them as nobodies. John Steinbeck wrote Of Men and Mice during depression and wrote about two men George and Lenny as the loneliest guys in the world which were like him not going to stay alone they are different and they will achieve there dream and this is what John Steinbeck achieved. Guy swho lived on ranches were usually very lonely but John Steinbeck was not going to be lonely and when too old be useless he wanted to overcome his dream. ââ¬Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They donââ¬â¢t belong no place. They come to a ranch anââ¬â¢ work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know theyââ¬â¢re poundinââ¬â¢ their tale on some other ranch. They ait got nothing to look ahead to.â⬠John Steinbeck then lived in California and wrote Grapes of Wrath a story about people who earned nothing and would work non stop for a slice of bread. Both Steinbecks novels are to do with money and people working so hard to become there dream like Lenny and George their dream was to have their dream house but it was out of their reach and they could not overcome it. Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 and lived until 1928. He lived in Dorset so knew a lot about the place he wrote the withered arm which was set in Dorset during 1825 although Hardy knew a lot about Dorset he set the novel before he was even born. Because the story was set so before his time he had to adapt his knowledge of Dorset to how it was in the 1820s his words had to be old fashioned and include long intense sentences to suit the play in the time it was set. Unlike John Steinbeck, Hardy wrote long sentences with old fashioned words. Thomas Hardy was educated locally and at 16 he worked for an architect. At 22 he went to London to train as architect, he then returned home, he then returned home in 1867 persue his chosen career to write novels. He had even started writing his first novel The Poor Man and the Lady, which was never published. Thomas Hardy wrote about fate and pentimizium, most of his novels were tragedies, and he appeared to grow more pessimistic in later life. He then stopped writing novels and returned to writing poetry. Thomas Hardy wrote the withered arm of which is his best known novel The withered arm DESCRIPTION OF STORY. Both the authors write about women confronted by circumstances that make their lives very difficult. The women are outsiders and are not loved and want a better life. Of Mice and Men written by john Steinbeck has a woman in, in the story her name is never spoken of she is referred to as Curlys wife as though she is his woman. She is the only woman on the ranch so is an outsider, she has no one to relate to. Curlys wife is presented in the Story Of Mice and Men as a tart or a flirt her clothing and her body language create a flirty atmosphere. Her clothing is very tarty she wears red clothing and red makeup and red was the colour usually worn by prostitutes so she is wearing these tarty clothes for attention. ââ¬Å"Quote Curlys wife descriptionâ⬠She wants to be looked at, her husband Curly is not giving her the attention she needs and she is feeling lonely and apart from the world, on her own and wants a friend or to be loved. Her husband Curly also lives on the Ranch and treats his wife as an outsider, curly doesnââ¬â¢t love his wife he just treats her as a sex object. The withered arm written by Thomas Hardy also has a woman in Rhoda Brook is made to feel as an outsider. Rhoda isnââ¬â¢t married and doesnââ¬â¢t have a partner, in those days to be a single mum was very unlikely so the people in her town thought she was a witch so she didnââ¬â¢t have many friends. Rhoda lives with her twelve year old son in father lodges cottage, Rhoda is very in love with Farmer Lodge but he has a very beautiful wife which Rhoda is extremly jealous of. ââ¬Å"The thin woman who had not spoken was joined by a boy of twelve or thereabout.â⬠Rhoda Brook is not very attractive she is pale, tall and thin. Unlike Curlys wife she isnââ¬â¢t beautiful so cannot use her beauty to attract men and get peoples attention. Rhoda is very jealous of beautiful woman so unlike Curlys wife, Rhoda is around other woman so isnt an outsider in that prospective she is an outsider because of men, she is neglected by men and is unlucky in love. Rhodas loneliness and emotional feelings only aid to the boys like Curlys wife she wants to be loved and cared about. Rhoda works on a farm as a ââ¬Ëmilking womanââ¬â¢. Curlys wife doesnââ¬â¢t work she is just a housewife for Curly. Curlys wife was very much like George and Lennie they all had a dream but none of them came true. Curlys wifeââ¬â¢s dream was to be a movie star but she could not live her dream because she met Curly, they fell in love and he took her away from the natural world and placed her in a lonely neglected environment on the ranch. On the Ranch she is never spoken to because the men on the ranch donââ¬â¢t want curly thinking there is something going on with her wife and another man because he would kick them off the ranch. Curly and Rhoda are very different in appearance but very similar in personality and would be feeling very alike. Rhoda is very modest and lifeless unlike Curlys wife who seems to be very outgoing and flirtatious.

Essay on ââ¬ÂRace, Class, Violence and Denial Mass Murder...
Essay on â⬠Race, Class, Violence and Denial: Mass Murder and the Pathologies of Privilegeâ⬠by Tim Wise Often when racial inequality and discrimination is being discussed, we get to think of terms such as ââ¬Å"white privilegeâ⬠and American history with the Civil Rights Act in 1964. But we think of it, mainly as history. And that, according to Tim Wise, an anti-racism activist and American writer, is the biggest self-deception of the modern American world. Throughout an article posted on his own webpage, concerning school shootings, Tim Wise discusses the general American attitude towards this relatively new phenomenon in American society. With the use of especially pathos Wise argues that the most concerning thing about these events is howâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The fact that the article is published on Wiseââ¬â¢s own webpage called: www.timwise.org is quite crucial to the way it appears. The author has created the webpage for himself and the purpose of it is to be the platform for his views on different matters. The ones who visit his webpage and read his articles ha ve this in mind from the beginning. Also they must be interested in him in some way or another. His main claim, that the school shootings is a result of the surroundings, works absolutely fine. When he refers to the general weapon availability in the United States, he backs up his ground with facts for the first time in his article, ââ¬Å"(â⬠¦)we should know by now that with 280 million guns in circulation, they canââ¬â¢t all be tucked into the waistbands of young black men who reside somewhere else(â⬠¦)(s.9 ll.61-62) He is surprised that people act surprised. Also, he criticizes white people for thinking that the only ones who canââ¬â¢t control weapons are the poor and colored ones. He uses the topic ââ¬Å"School shootingsâ⬠to raise a debate about a still ongoing racial discrimination in the US. It seems intelligent of him to choose this topic, since the horror of it is something almost everyone more or less agree on, since it is something everyone wants to en d. He claims that the only way to ever set a stop to this madness is for the communities to take responsibility. All these arguments connect in aShow MoreRelatedRastafarian79520 Words à |à 319 Pagesoddities that would seem to suggest that Rastafarianism is an absurd religion include: 1. Textual Analysis - 1180 Words
Towards a better and cleaner textile industry [Textual Analysis] Written Assignment 4 This assignment is through an analysis of appeal forms, speech acts, move structures, text functions, text types and relevant rhetorical strategies going to determine the genre and purpose of the text ââ¬ËTowards a better and cleaner textile industryââ¬â¢, which was posted on Novozymes website on March 30, 2011. Appeal Forms The text consists of a number of logical arguments that promote the use of enzymes in the textile industry, which means the dominating appeal form is logos. This is supported by the use of numbers (l. 1-3), scientific terms as polycarboxylates, enzymes and molecule and the reference to the special trial method; LCA (l. 18-23). Thisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦17-38) and at last the peroration (l. 40-45). This is supported by the common known subject i.e. that Novozymes produces enzymes and the use of both logos and ethos appeal. In addition, the move structure more specifically follows the news-report move structure as it uses the inverted pyramid, where the most important information is in the beginning. The moves are: Event (l. 1-3), then interpretation (l.4-8) followed by background (l. 10-15), details of the event (l. 17-23), background (25-42) and at last comments from people involved (l. 42-43). As the text comes from Novozymes, it would though be characterized as a press rel ease which often bears resemblance to the news-report move structure. Though as mentioned in the paragraph about appeal forms, the use of ethos indicates that the text is not only made for an informative purpose. Text Functions At first sight, the function of the text is the informative text function, as it seeks to express something about the referent. This is supported by the dominant use of logos appeal, representative speech acts and the move structure being press release. Though, as the commissive speech act and indirect directive speech acts are also present, there is evidence that the text also has an indirect directive text function as it tries to affect the receiver to use enzymes. In combination with the use of ethos, this indicates that the text has a character of argumentation. The Human Resource Practices-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com
Question: Choose two of the following HR Practices and Explain how Cultural differences may have an Impact. Answer: Introduction Currently, International human resource management is a key aspect for consideration for the multi-national companies. Different nations have different cultures, political states and social-economic positions which affect the businesses in many different ways. Thus, application of one of the human resource management practice in one country may produce different results when applied to another nation. Therefore, unlike the domestic human resource management, it is hard to manage human resource at a global level which necessitates the application of strategies that are likely to handle these differences in the nations (Kundu, Divya Pardeep, 2007). The USA is a federal state that is made up of fifty states, five governing territories and also a federal district. USA has over 324 millions of people living I these states which cover about 9.8 million square kilometers. It country ranks the third in the world by total area. It has one of the most powerful economies in the world. On the other hand, India is a south Asian country with federal governance, large enough at position seven in the world by area. Currently, India is one of the word's fastest growing economies. Amazon has ventured into both USA and India and currently active in these countries (Chow, Huang, Liu, 2008). Recruitment is one of the key aspects of the organization that must be handled with care. When done at international level, the agencies involved usually take appropriate strategies for effectiveness. Internationally, recruitment can be done at parent country nation, host country or third country nation (Birasnav Rangnekar, 2009). On the other hand, career development entails all the activities that are involved in developing the skills and experiences that are required to help one handle both the current and the future career roles. People in different nations develop their careers differently due to different cultures (Adnan, Abdullah, Ahmad, 2011). The purpose of this report is to bring out the differences that exist in various aspects of the international human resource due to differences in culture of the countries under consideration. It establishes how Amazon recruitment and selection is done differently by Amazon and India due to the cultural differences that exist between the two countries. Also, the essay targets to establish the differences that exist in the career development as one of the aspects of the international human resource. Therefore, this essay exposes the international human resource management differences that exist in different countries due to differences in cultural contexts. Recruitment and Selection Recruitment refers to the process through which a given company uses to identify, screen, shortlist and hire the potential right people to take up job vacancies in a given organization. It is a very critical step in the every organization and must be done with minimum mistakes to get the best skill and talent for the organization. It entails all the activities that are undertaken to attract, select and get the potential candidates that who have the right qualifications to take up the job positions in the organization (Absar, 2012). Selection entails the activities that are undertaken to identify the most qualified people from those that have been attracted for a given job position in the organization. Selection can be done through interviews, checking in the referees and also testing them. Recruitment and selection have a different perception at the international level. Amazon being of the multinational organizations employs different recruitment and selection strategies (Zhu, Warner Rowley, 2007). The way the organization conducts recruitment and selection in one country is different from the other. This is because the recruitment strategies employed in one country cannot necessarily yield fruits in the other country. This fact is attributed to the fact that different nations have different cultural dimensions (Deloitte, 2011). Comparing the recruitment at USA and India, there are differences and similarities that come out. India is one of the countries with high uncertainty index according to Hofstedes cultural dimension, the state adopted strategies that emphasize on testing and monitoring the processes of recruitment. The process is profoundly influenced by the traditional management. This is different from the USA which has a low uncertainty index. These differences make the force organizations that operation in USA and India to employ different strategies to conduct recruitment and selection. Amazon as a multinational company operates in both countries and has employed different strategies in the two countries for effective management of the human resource of the organization. Also, India is a high power distance country. Thus there is a lot of emphasis on the connections rather than recruitment and selection (Effron and Shanley, 2011). This is different from the USA which is a low power distance country that emphasizes on the advertising, recruiting and selection. Therefore, the cultural differences in cultural dimensions between the USA and India bring about differences in recruitment and selection processes (Gusdorf, 2008). Career Management Career management is defined as a continuous learning process that entails planning and the shaping of the individuals in acquiring the skills that are necessary for the helping an employee to achieve the future goals and expectations of the career market. Career management is a human resource practice that demands the contribution of both the employer and the employees themselves (Benko and Weisberg, 2007). The employee needs to do self-assessment and make efforts to work towards achieving the future market goals and expectations in the field. Different countries have different ways in which people manage their careers depending on the prevailing nations culture (Cheese, 2008). Usually, career management entails three main steps that guide an individual to grow in their lines. Firstly, there must be career planning which is the process of identifying the goals that need to be achieved (Bharathi, 2009). It entails self-assessment practices that helps one know their interests and the development needs and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses in ones life. Secondly, there is career channeling where one identifies the routes in the career to follow depending on the goals. The last step is career development which is a continuous process throughout one's life. The organization plays a critical role in the career management of a given employee because of their support (Benett, 2013). The role of the organization in the career of employees in India and the US has various similarities and differences in the two nations. Usually, the companies consider training and development, mentoring programs, lateral growth and the performance evaluation. India offers minimal training and development to its employees, unlike the US which advocates for pieces of training and believes that it is a way to help employees and increase productivity in the organization (Singh Mohanty, 2011). Also, India has little emphasis on the mentoring programs for its employees as compared to the USA which has promoted these programs to help its employees increase the career management. Regarding the performance evaluation, both countries advocate practice this aspect as a way to establish the level of productivity and effectiveness of the employees in the organizations (Warner, 2008). It is evident that a similar organization running business in the USA and India is forced to differently handle the career management as one of functions of the human resource in business. Amazon is a player in both the US and India. The career management practices that company employs in India is totally different from that it uses in the US. This is mainly because of the two countries have different cultural dimesions. Conclusion In conclusion, the international human resource has various aspects that need to be considered for effectiveness. Multinational companies find challenges in the practices that they should employ in the subsidiaries operating in different nations. This is mainly because similar practices yield different results when applied in the various countries. Recruitment and selection in India and USA depict differences in the way they are done. Also, career management as one of the aspects of human resource is done differently in the two countries, and only a few similarities exist in practice. The explanation for the differences in the international human resource management practices is greatly attributed to the cultural differences that exist among various countries. According to Hofstedes cultural dimensions, states have varied aspects of culture which is the primary cause of the differences in business activity practices that exist. Therefore, the prevailing culture, political state, and social, economic positions have influence not only recruitment and career development but also on the entire organizations human resource practices of the organization in different countries.
